Aleksandr Ivanovich Antipenko Order of the Badge of Honor nr. 70557 was awarded by Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of July 2, 1945 to Aleksandr Ivanovich Antipenko, construction superintendant at Factory nr. 292 of the People's Commissariat of the Aircraft Industry in Saratov, Saratov Province. ![]() Factory nr. 292 of the People's Commissariat of the Aircraft Industry (NKAP) was built in Saratov in 1930-1931 as the Saratov Combine Harvester Plant (SZK). In August 1937, with the threat of war looming, the factory was reoriented toward the production of military aircraft and redesignated as Factory nr. 292 or the Saratov Aircraft Factory (SAZ). Starting in 1938, the plant rebuilt its machine tools, developed new technology, and manufactured thousands of specialized components. It even built its own airfield. In October 1938 the plant's first aircraft, an R-10 single-engine reconnaissance aircraft, took off from the airfield. Over the next two years it built 135 of these planes. In June 1940 Factory nr. 292 was ordered to start mass producing the Yak-1 fighter. In October of that year the first Yaks took off the from the plant's airfield. In February 1943 the factory tested and started producing the Yak-1M, starting an intense collaborative effort with the Yakovlev Design Bureau. The plant eventually manufactured 310-320 Yak-1M planes on average each month. Factory nr. 292 did not survive the war unscathed; it was a popular target for long-range German bombers. A massive air raid on June 24, 1943 caused extensive damage, but owing to titanic reconstruction efforts the factory was back up and running and producing aircraft in previous quantities by mid-September 1943. In January 1944 the factory started manufacturing the Yak-3 fighter. By the end of the war, Factory nr. 292 had producted 8668 Yak-1 and 4009 Yak-3 fighters, as well as PPSh submachine guns, F-1 hand grenades, mortar shells, and antiaircraft guns. For its immense efforts during the war, Factory nr. 292 was awarded the Order of Lenin in July 1942 and the Order of the Red Banner of Labor on July 2, 1945. That same day Aleksandr Antipenko was awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor. After World War Two, the factory producted various newer models of Yak planes, as well as various MiG models and the Lavochkin La-15 jet aircraft. The company was declared bankrupt in February 2011 and the factory closed its doors in September 2012.
